Vietnam - Hanoi & Halong Bay Highlights

Last month for the third time whilst living in Da Nang, Vietnam, I (Angela) went to Hanoi. It is one of my favourite cities in Vietnam, following Da Nang of course. It is a beautiful place to see and visit.

Flew Vietnam Airlines from Da Nang to Hanoi. Vietnam Airlines is the national carrier of Vietnam and has one of the greatest service and always on time with their flights.

When you arrive in the charming capital of Hanoi you realise how well the locals have been able to preserve the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture while making room for the modern developments.

One of the sites which I enjoyed seeing was Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum as well as the lakes, parks, the boulevards and pagodas. The city is very easy to explore as everything is walking distance from each other. As you are walking in the city you don't realise how long you have been walking as there is so much to see and admire on the way to the different attractions and there are many places were you can sit, relax and have a coffee while admiring the culture right in front of you.

A couple of hours north of Hanoi, is Halong Bay. It is one of the UNESCO must places to visit. It's a MUST if you have a couple of days at least to explore the area. I went for a one day tour to Halong bay but they advise to go on a 2-3 day tour, staying overnight on 'Junks'. You are able to sleep on the junk boats as well as visit a few islands while on the tour such as Cat Ba Island. You are also able to swim and sleep on the island. I did a one day tour and even though the trip to Halong from Hanoi was very tiring once you get there you are left speechless.

The natural site that has not been touched by man is amazing. The junk boat tour provides lunch on board with commentary. You can take photos, go swimming and just take in the beautiful panorama of Halong Bay. There is also the opportunity to go Kayaking inside the caves which I did and that is one of the highlights of the trip. You get to discover for yourself Halong Bay by going inside and up close to the caves.

One other highlight of the tour is to go and see the Cave where you can see the Stalactites and appreciate the natural rock formations. Some rocks have shapes of an animal or human face.

Overall, I can see why Hanoi is one of the most photographed places in the world. It is a place where I would visit many times as there is so much to do and see. I love this city and the people are so friendly and ready to help you even when you don't ask.
