Skiing Japan - Nozawa Onsen

Skiing Japan - Nozawa Onsen

Japan is a fantastic destination for a family ski holiday.  We travelled by bullet train to Nagano then transferred to the resort by bus. Nozawa Onsen village is well-known for having the heaviest snowfall in Nagano Prefecture. It is a traditional village in the mountains with culture running through the streets.  Famous for its public and plentiful private onsens makes this a great village to experience and culturally it dates back to the 8th century. The skiing attracts varying types of levels (my kids and husband are very experienced) and also has a snow park which is about 2km long. There is a day care centre as wells as kids park, sledding and tubing. Plentiful food and the steamed hot buns on the side of the lanes made this a favourite every afternoon for our kids. We stayed in a traditional Ryokan with 3 private onsens. This certainly made us relax after a great day skiing. The Fire Festival (Dosojin Matsuri) is held every year in January. It means the old roads that run like rivers between mountain towns in Japan are dotted with gods, known as Dosojin. Dosojin are good gods for the foreign traveller. One hundred villagers cut down the tree in October and carry this down the mountain into the village to build a shrine. The Fire Festival happens on January 15. Make sure you book ahead as this is a famous tradition always gets booked out in January.

A great resort and family favourite.
