My husband Alok and I went to Port Douglas a couple of years back. It was an amazing holiday! We flew into Cairns at night and got dropped off by a transfer at the iconic Sheraton Mirage. It’s a beautiful property (though corridors and rooms are a bit dated, but I guess it’s meant to be since it is a heritage property) and one of the best buffet breakfasts ever! Port Douglas is a beautiful little town; pretty and lush with exotic fauna. It’s a very small town – it doesn’t even have its own movie theatre! – but there’s plenty to see in and around it.
It is the best place to see two beautiful World Heritage listed sites; The Daintree Rainforest and The Great Barrier Reef.
We had the booked the Great Barrier Reef tour with Quicksilver. We were picked up timely from our hotel and taken to the wharf and from there we boarded the vessel that took us to the pontoon quite deep in the ocean. At the pontoon there were various things to do, such as scuba diving, snorkelling, submarine rides and helicopter rides to name a few. We snorkelled and also tried the submarine which was brilliant, but if you really want to see something amazing, I would recommend the 10 minute helicopter ride over the reef. It is the most spectacular sight and you get an idea of the scale of The Great Barrier Reef.
Now this is why we travel agents always ask you to book your tours in advance. I somehow thought I would book the Daintree Rainforest tour when I arrived into Port Douglas, however all the tours were fully booked out. In the end we bought a self-help tour CD for The Daintree Rainforest and drove up to Cape Tribulation. It is no doubt breath takingly beautiful but there was only some info we could get out of the CD; the experience of seeing The Daintree Rainforest would've been much more enriching had we booked a tour for it.
All in all, it is a MUST SEE destination.
